Success Before We Started

Can you believe 30 people came to a meeting to plan a cleanup?

Not to do the cleanup, but to plan it.

On March 4, it happened in Gadsden during the logistics discussions for the April 28 – May 1 cleanup for Neely Henry. Renew Our Rivers founder and APC retiree Gene Phifer said, “Good planning is the key.”

Employees from Gadsden Steam Plant and several departments along with members of Keep Etowah Beautiful (KEB), the Neely Henry Lake Association and other civic groups were there.  They talked about trash pickup and disposal, communications and safety, and volunteers and supplies.

Lisa Dover, chairperson for KEB, expects many volunteers this year and is working to make sure everyone will have what they need to get the job done.  KEB and the Emergency Management Agency will also set up a central control trailer at the lake a week prior to cleanup to handle any emergencies.  Collected trash will be deposited at the Gadsden Amphitheater located across the river as in years past.

To volunteer with the cleanup, contact Lisa at 256-549-0900.

Cleaning Up in Camden

March 3, 2010 by

Brrr!

On the jobIt’s been cold lately, but not cold enough to stop the first cleanup of the year. Even with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees, Alabama Power employees, several representatives from the Corps of Engineers and volunteers from Wilcox County bundled up to clean up 62 miles of the Alabama River near Camden during the last week of February. They also cleaned up some of the land surrounding the waters in Wilcox County.

Some of the trash recovered included a freezer (apparently no longer needed with the cold), buoys, Styrofoam, drums, parts of piers and spill containment equipment. Items flagged earlier by residents during last year’s August 1st cleanup were also removed.
