It’s been cold lately, but not cold enough to stop the first cleanup of the year. Even with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees, Alabama Power employees, several representatives from the Corps of Engineers and volunteers from Wilcox County bundled up to clean up 62 miles of the Alabama River near Camden during the last week of February. They also cleaned up some of the land surrounding the waters in Wilcox County.
Some of the trash recovered included a freezer (apparently no longer needed with the cold), buoys, Styrofoam, drums, parts of piers and spill containment equipment. Items flagged earlier by residents during last year’s August 1st cleanup were also removed.

For the past 6 years, Alabama Power has worked with the Five Mile Creek Greenway Partnership to improve the health of that waterway. Five Mile Creek is the focus of a greenway project that will eventually stretch 28 miles across Jefferson County, linking into other bikeways and greenways. Clean-ups have been a big part of the effort, but other interesting things have come out of this multi-year project. Parks and playgrounds have been built. Trails and canoe put-ins have been installed for other recreational users.
Each year, the volunteers focus on a different part of the creek. This year, the event is scheduled to take place in Brookside on April 10. One of the tasks includes restoring a historic shotgun house that will become a history museum for the community. The hope is to have it finished in time for the Brookside Greenway Festival in late April for a grand opening.
